Friday 5th October was a great day for videoing trains at Perth.  No wind to spoil the soundtrack and the late afternoon sun was shining brightly.  The above video is a montage showing a DRS freight hauled by '66' class number 403. This is followed by the 17.56 Highland Chieftain on its way from Kings Cross to Inverness made up of power units 43112 and 43102.  These won't be displaying their GNER logo's for much longer!  However the 'main' event was the arrival of Class 55 Deltic No. 55022 'The Royal Scots Grey' on the Railway Touring Company's 'Autumn Highlander' from Kings Cross to Inverness, with weekend trips to Kyle of Lochalsh, and Wick / Thurso.  This is 'tailed' by class 50 No 50049 'Defiance'.  Also in the video is class 40 No 40145 East Lancashire Railway which was taking the train on to Inverness and all points north.  (The links are to the Deltic Preservation Society, the Royal Scots Grey, The Railway Touring Company, and the Class 40 Preservation sites respectively) The was Deltic subjected to lots of attention before it left its train.  It was taken off prior to powering an SRPS excursion on Saturday 6th October from Dundee to Oban.  I did contemplate going off and filming it somewhere, until I found out that it left Dundee at 06.28.  Then I rapidly lost interest!  I understand it will return to Perth for Monday and take the 'Autumn Highlander back down south to Kings Cross.

Listening to the Deltic's engine is totally different to the Class 40 - it makes the Class 40 sound 'squeaky'! And when it departed its train it shot off at a speed that gave every impression of being the start of a new race north!.  It certainly was a very impressive sight even, if it is only a diesel!

Class 50 at the tail, No. 50049 'Defiance' this time with the same name and number on eack side to avoid confusing simple folk like me! Awaiting the arrival of its train from the south 40145 sits quietly at the north end of Perth's Platform 3
